Canon EOS Rebel XS Review

Review Summary

Review (Summary): "... the headlines are; a 10MP sensor, 2.5 in LCD monitor, 7-point AF system and no spot-metering (like the 400D) but gaining Live View with both phase- and contrast-detect AF, SD/SDHC for storage and a control and menu layout that is pretty much identical to the EOS 450D's. ...

... Having helped create the 'affordable' DSLR, Canon has taken a while to respond to the latest, comparatively wallet-friendly offerings from the likes of Nikon and Sony. The 1000D is a pretty convincing response - it does just about everything it needs to do, and everything it does, it does well. It can produce great images at any of its ISO settings and, viewed as a whole, makes a great first DSLR. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The Canon EOS 1000D is the lowest specification DSLR in the range so technically, it won't be as good as the EOS 450D. The main differences are the lower 10Mp resolution of the EOS 1000D and only a 7-point AF system. There's also a lack of spot metering, smaller 2.5in LCD screen, slower 3fps and only 12bit RAW compression compared the EOS 450D's 14bit compression. ...

... The great performance results I achieved from the camera coupled with Canon's notorious ease of use means the EOS 1000D is perfect for its target audience. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "At first sight, the Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS in the U.S.) looks exactly like the EOS 400D (Rebel XTi in the U.S.). The latter will disappear from the assortment as of now. A logical decision, considering the 400D and 450D are very closely related. With the introduction of the Canon 1000D, Canon create room and offer the consumer a full digital SLR with an appealing price tag. ...

... Compared to a few years ago, you really get a whole lot of camera for your money's worth. The specifications are high and although some details such as spot metering are no longer available on the new Canon EOS 1000D, it is a full digital DSLR camera. It will offer the beginning photographer, perhaps making the step from a compact camera to a DSLR, a tool to fully express his creativity. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "... The EOS 1000D is remarkably similar in appearance to its marginally larger relative - the 450D. The basic shape is pretty much identical, although you will be able to spot some minor differences if you look closely enough. The hand grip on the front of the camera, which is rubberized on the 450D, is made of a finely textured plastic and does not feature an integrated IR sensor - there is no IR remote available for the 1000D. ...

... The EOS 1000D is available as body only (Europe only, left image) and as a kit with the EF-S 18-55 mm lens with or without image stabilization (right image). Apart from the lens the box contents of the 'body only' and kit versions are identical. Note that there is no storage card included with the EOS 1000D. ..."

Review Diary (Summary): "We liked the Rebel XTi/400D a lot and the Rebel XSi/450D is a good improvement. This means that the Rebel XS/1000D is to be expected to be a fine camera too. Look at the features and your budget. All three cameras are not a wrong choice.

With most cameras today we feel that ISO 100-400 defines our comfort zone. This means we use this range without any further thought (unless you plan to print very large or have to deal with very deep shadows. ..."

Photo Review ----- 07-29-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "Replacing the popular EOS 400D at the entry level of Canon's DSLR range, the EOS 1000D (EOS Rebel XS in the U.S.) brings yet another level to Canon's DSLR nomenclature, reflecting the days of film, when Canon's lowest-priced SLR cameras had four-figure model names. The 1000D has been designed for photographers who want to upgrade from a digicam to a more capable, better performing DSLR. It boasts the same 10.1-megapixel imager as the 400D but is smaller and lighter and supports Live View shooting. ...

... Low-light performance was very good. Shots taken at ISO 1600 were sharp and color-accurate with only a hint of visible color noise. This was eliminated with the high ISO noise reduction setting. Long exposure noise reduction produced minimal image softening. Lateral chromatic aberration was generally low and negligible at the 55mm focal length setting. ..."
